about
We kindly invite you to a screening and discussion of the film "River" on Wednesday, April 16 at 5:00 PM. "River" is a visually stunning documentary odyssey about how rivers have shaped our planet's landscapes and human history.
The film takes you on a journey through time across six continents, using satellite footage and stunning cinematography to reveal rivers and their wild nature from never-before-seen perspectives. It is a mesmerizing yet evocative work, where the combination of visuals, a score by an Australian chamber orchestra, music by iconic rock band Radiohead, and a poetic narration narrated by Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe underscores not only the grandeur of rivers, but also their fragility.
This month's partner of "Sengirės kino" is "Nemunas 2.0". This is a charity and support foundation that seeks to preserve the largest Lithuanian river for future generations. The foundation's goal is to create open monitoring of river ecosystems, allowing for the prompt identification of pollution sources, prevention of pollution, and promotion of public involvement in river protection.
“We chose “River” as the second film in the program because its topic is extremely hot and relevant in Lithuania today. There are many discussions in the public space about the use and protection of rivers, but there is a great lack of constructive conversation between different points of view. The film we propose allows us to take a broader view – it looks at rivers not only as a living being whose flow has shaped the world, but also as the cradle of civilizations, a condition for human survival. When selecting films, it is important to us that they reveal complex topics in a sensitive and formally interesting way. We believe that this helps to establish a closer connection with the audience and encourage them to think about the future more deeply, more broadly, and more uncomfortably,” say the project organizers Aistė Račaitytė and Silvija Duoblytė.
“Sengirės Kinas” is a project that combines cinema, environmental protection and education, based on documentary film screenings once a month in libraries and cultural centers of Lithuanian cities and towns. Carefully selected films from around the world about the magnificence and vulnerability of nature will be shown together with presentations by naturalists who will update them in the Lithuanian context. The film program will be accompanied by live meetings, discussions, excursions and other events that draw attention to the state of Lithuania’s ecology. “Sengirės Kinas” is a platform where cinema becomes a tool for change, and viewers – a community of change.
