Birštonas scented whale

education

The coat of arms of the city of Birštonas was created by the artist A. Kazdailis in 1995. The central figure in the coat of arms is a mythical fish - a whale, from which springs a spring of mineral water. 20th century at the beginning of the year, the spring of mineral water gushing on the Nemunas coast was protected from the spring glaciers by a whale-shaped sculpture. Before the construction of Kaunas HPP in 1959 a small sculpture of a whale with mineral water flowing from its mouth was an attraction for both townspeople and resort guests. However, when the water level of the Nemunas River rose, the sculpture that became the symbol of the resort ended up under water.
