The fragrant whale of Birštonas

The coat of arms of the city of Birštonas was created by the artist A. Každailis in 1995. The central figure on the coat of arms is a mythical fish - a whale, from which a spring of mineral water gushes. At the beginning of the 20th century, a spring of mineral water gushing on the banks of the Nemunas was protected from spring ice floes by a sculpture in the shape of a whale. Until the construction of the Kaunas HPP in 1959, a small sculpture of a whale, from whose mouth mineral water flowed, was a place of attraction for both the townspeople and the resort guests. However, when the water level of the Nemunas rose, the sculpture, which had become a symbol of the resort, ended up underwater.

The whale was reborn in an educational session at the Birštonas Sacral Museum, during which visitors form whale-shaped cookies from dough made according to the 12th century St. Hildegard's recipe, and enjoy them with thyme tea. There is also time to get acquainted with the museum's exhibition. St. Hildegard urged us to taste these cookies as often as possible so that we would not lack more joy and good mood.
Education is intended for: students in grades 1–5.
Duration of education — 60 – 75 minutes.
The price of the educational session per participant: 4 Eur per child (student).
