The museum, located in the building of a wooden villa, was loved by both Birštonas vacationers and tourists from further afield. Here in half an hour you can learn the most interesting facts about the history of the resort and see a number of valuable historical, art and technical exhibits. In addition, visiting the museum is free, unless you book a tour or educational program, and it is open six days a week.
First of all, the museum building, included in the list of cultural heritage, is noteworthy. in 1933 this romantic villa with turrets and ornamented balconies was built by forester Antanas Katelė. Until the Second World War, it was rented to teachers undergoing medical treatment in Biršton. After the war, the building was nationalized, a sanatorium was established here, and since 1967 - a museum.
The largest part of the exposition is devoted to the resort period of Birštonas from the time of the Tsar to the present day. A few exhibits commemorate the Middle Ages and the times of the royal residence. These are the archaeological findings of the surrounding mounds, a visualization of the former castle. Worthy of special attention is the at least three-hundred-year-old boat intended for moving across the Nemunas.
The flourishing of Birštonas in the interwar period is commemorated by an authentic phaeton, which was used between 1918 and 1938. Adomas Jurkulnevičius drove vacationers from Kaunas to the resort. Of special interest is the equipment and life story of dentist Ignos Šablauskas. This active doctor not only helped with toothaches, but also led the brass band in the Kurhaus on weekends.
From an artistic point of view, the most valuable copies of the works of the academician artist Nikodemos Silvanavičius.
One of the educational programs can be ordered in advance. The most interesting is the "Birštonas mineral water springs", during which you will learn that there is absolutely no fresh water in the resort.
